Press Release: Oct. 10, 2015 Meeting

For Immediate Release:

Quilt Artist Talk on Thread Painting at Coastal Quilters Meeting

Camden, Maine, September 25, 2015—Art quilter Kathy Daniels of Rockport will give a talk about freestyle machine embroidery at the next Coastal Quilters meeting, 10:00 a.m. Saturday, October 10, at the Camden Lions Club. This art quilt technique is best described as painting with thread, and uses quilting cotton (or other fabrics), colored threads, and a sewing machine instead of canvas, paint, and brushes. Best known for her intricate landscapes, Kathy will provide an in-depth look at her process, from choosing a scene through to the completed piece. She will end her talk with a slide presentation of some of her work. Visitors are welcome and admission is free.

Kathy Daniels has created art since she was a child. As she grew as an artist, she was drawn more and more to fabric, color, and texture, and she wanted to find a way she could integrate them with her interests in drawing and painting. Using thread as a medium to capture the rich colors and light typical of coastal Maine, Kathy says she loves to see the magic that happens when layered threads become shadows, grasses, or distant horizons. Her award-winning work has been in solo and group exhibitions, and it can be seen at Small Wonder Gallery in Camden and at Maine Coast Heritage Trust’s annual Aldermere Farm Art Show.

Coastal Quilters, a chapter of the statewide Pinetree Quilt Guild, meets the second Saturday of the month at the Camden Lions Club on Lions Lane. Its purpose is educational and anyone interested in quilting, at any level, is most welcome. Current members represent every type of quilter, from traditional to modern and art quilters.
