Press Release: Nov. 14, 2015 Meeting

For Immediate Release:

Color Theory Presentation by Susan Tobey White

Camden, Maine, November 5, 2015—At the next Coastal Quilters meeting, artist and educator Susan Tobey White will explain and demonstrate how an understanding of color and value are among the elements that can turn a nicely crafted quilt into a work of art. She will also include illustrative examples of her artwork. The presentation, which is free and open to everyone, will take place at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, November 14, at the Camden Lions Club.

Traditional, modern, and art quilters can use principles of color theory to choose colors that work well together, adding balance and contrast to the overall design and helping quilters express specific emotions, or create quilts that harmonize and work well within their intended environments. While the presentation will focus on quilting, much of the information will be of interest to multi-media artists, as well.

Susan Tobey White received a BA in art education and was an elementary art teacher for 15 years, becoming an expert at making difficult concepts understandable and interesting. Ms. White also attributes her love of bright colors to exposure to her students’ “delightful creations.” She now teaches workshops in acrylics and watercolor. Two years ago Ms. White was certified in Golden Artist Colors’s Artist Educator Program.

Although known primarily as a painter, Ms. White has been surrounded by many types of crafts, including quilting, her whole life. Thirteen years ago she opened High Street Studio & Gallery in Belfast, where she shows her work and the work of guest artists. Ms. White’s paintings are in private collections throughout the U.S. and abroad.

Coastal Quilters, a chapter of the statewide Pinetree Quilt Guild, meets the second Saturday of the month at the Camden Lions Club on Lions Lane. Its purpose is educational and anyone interested in quilting, at any level, is most welcome. Current members represent every type of quilter, from traditional to modern and art quilters.
