Press Release: April 9, 2016 Meeting

Program on Modern Quilting

Camden, Maine, March 25, 2016—The April 9th meeting of Coastal Quilters will feature author and quilt designer Amy Friend, who will talk about how her quilt designs fit within the definition of modern quilting. “Modern quilts” are functional quilts with a contemporary, graphic aesthetic that often incorporate bold colors and designs and improvisational piecing, and sometimes include updated versions of classic quilt designs. Amy also will present a trunk show of quilts from her new book, Intentional Piecing, and discuss how to choose appropriate fabrics and patterns for modern quilts. The meeting will start at 10:00 a.m. at the Lions Club in Camden. The presentation is free and open to all.

Amy Friend is a former museum curator who learned to sew as a child from her mother and grandmother. Her work has been exhibited at QuiltCon, where one of her quilts recently won second place, and at the Texas Quilt Museum and the Modern Quilt Guild Showcase at the International Quilt Festival. Her patterns have been included in several publications and are available in quilt shops and on her blog,

  1. Thank you so much for opening your program to all. I read about it in The Republican Journal and since I quilt was very eager to attend the program. Amy was a wonderful speaker and an extremely talented quilter and designer. Again, many thanks for your hospitality.
